There are many reasons for the water dispenser in a refrigerator to not work. Again, some suggestions are going to sound a little strange. However, something as obvious as an on/off switch on the refrigerator has been the cause in some instances. Be sure to review the obvious potential issues before proceeding with refrigerator repair. Let’s begin to tackle this appliance repair problem and see all of the causes we can come up with for a broken water dispenser.

The cause of a broken water dispenser is commonly an installation problem, a filter failure or frozen water tubes:

Refrigerator Installation Issues

You just installed a new refrigerator for your kitchen with a water dispenser, but it’s not dispensing water. The water dispenser has to be hooked up to the water line. That could be the reason for the problem.

If your new refrigerator is replacing a prior refrigerator that did not include a water dispenser or ice maker, there is a chance that you don’t have a water line near this area. Most of the time a water line is commonly run from underneath the house either in a crawl space or basement. You can get this type of water line at almost any hardware store and they are pretty easy for even the typical homeowner to install. Usually they have include a built-in water shut-off valve, which is important so that if you need to relocate the refrigerator, you can turn off the water.

If there’s a connected water line, is the valve turned on? The valve handle needs to be lined up with the hose. And, is water running through the pipe you have installed to connect the water line? Obvious and basic questions, but items that need to be confirmed.

If you had to remove the refrigerator doors during installation it’s possible the water dispenser may not be plugged in. Check the manual to find the wire harness for that particular refrigerator. Check that it is plugged into the refrigerator.

Once the water is connected, most of the time there’s air in the water line. So, lifting and lowering the dispenser control on the refrigerator to get the air out is necessary.
Filter Problems

On some of the models, there are different filters. These filters could “expire”, clog or freeze. All filters are based on your model and type of refrigerator. If your filter is blocked it will cause slow filling or no flowing. It is recommended that your filter is replaced every 6 months. Replacing filters can be hard sometimes. If you run into problems, go online or call us and learn the right method to replace a filter.

One recommendation is to fill the water filter with water before installing it. Typically the water filters will take a long amount of time to fill, which could cause you to believe that the water dispenser on the refrigerator isn’t working. You will want to read the directions if nothing is working. To be certain it’s not air caught in the lines, depress the dispenser arm for about 5 minutes.

A frozen water tank might also be the cause of the issue as well in some refrigerators. If the tank freezes it will leak onto the food bins. Limited food inside of the fresh food bins will cause freezing to happen.
